Week One: |
If it's already April and you're just getting around to checking on my latest update, you should click here, since that was a March update
These next two sets of pictures really show what Spring in Ohio is like. On the second of the month, we got hit with a snowstorm. Luckily in our area, it didn't amount to much; while around here (Cleveland to Youngstown) got up to a foot of snow. |
If April showers bring May flowers, wonder what April snow is supposed to bring? |
Just a few days later (on the 7th), we nearly reached 80 degrees. Of course, I got bitten with the Spring Fever bug (oops. better not talk about fevers ) and couldn't stay inside. So, I moved a load of bricks front my front porch to the backyard and built up a nice planter box around the patch where my cosmos will be growing. |

When the cosmos aren't filling up this patch, I have a hard time keeping the dogs out when they are outside barking at passers-by, etc. That's one of the reasons I wanted to built this planter, so that there was some stronger support for the small fence around the area. However, that didn't stop Zeus from pushing the fence down enough to get in. Too bad he didn't push it down enough to get back out though. |

Now I'm just waiting for it to really be Spring up here, so that I can start planting. |

With all these pictures of Baba, I can't forget to put in a picture of Jim's other kitty too -Tsunami! |
Baba finally on my lap (only because I won't let go of her. LOL) |
Unfortunately fortunate, Jim and I had to take a trip over to Salem to see Carolynn. I say fortunate because it's always a pleasure to see Randy's mom. I say unfortunate because she has been quite sick lately. In intense pain, she was taken to the ER on Tues. After several tests, and with several CAT scans to come (I might be taking her to Cleveland next week for one), they still aren't certain what's wrong but are thinking that it might be a pinched nerve in her neck. |
The hour drive over was quite nice due to the beautiful weather we are having (can you believe it? a weekend WITHOUT rain!). Of course, we stopped off to see Herman the camel too. |

MouseOver this picture, and you'll have to ask yourself just why Jim wanted to touch this beast. (check out all that foam on his muzzle!) |
We're not the only crazy people pulling off the road to see the camels either. While we were stopped, this guy pulled up on his motorcycle - and pulled from his saddle bag a digital camera just like mine. Jim took a picture for the guy of him with Herman. |

Week Two: |
My web hosting company was having serious technical difficulties this weekend and for most of the weekend, my domain was OFFLINE! Hopefully, things are fixed up now.

While I was working outside in the yard, the puppies kept me company and Aries gets to be the "GBS" of the month. |
Speaking of Aries, he had a serious medical problem the other night, nearly scaring me to death. Poor little Aries had a seizure! Unfortunately, this condition does run in cocker spaniels family lines, and Aries' aunt (L.B.B.) also had seizures, which was the eventual cause of her passing. |
Ain't he cute? |
When L.B.B. had seizures, I didn't have the internet. (Gosh, that was a loooong time ago) But now I have broadband, and needless to say, I've done a ton of researching on dog seizures. Here's some of what I learned:
Parts of a Seizure
- The aura phase is characterized by behavioral changes such as whining, restlessness, hiding or apprehension.
- The ictus phase is the seizure stage and is characterized by all the signs associated with the seizure: unconsciousness, muscle activity, salivation, etc.
- The postictal phase occurs immediately after the seizure and may last a few minutes to several days. It may be characterized by confusion, wandering, blindness or unresponsiveness.
From my reading, I believe that Aries had a Tonic Clonic Grand Mal seizure. During the Grand Mal seizure, the tonic phase is when the dog falls to the ground, rigidly stretches his legs out and loses consciousness. The clonic stage exhibits paddling of limbs, pupils in both eyes dilate and unresponsive, and the dog loses control of bodily functions and begins to drool, urinate or defecate on itself.
Aries Seizure Timeline Tues 4/11 - Wed 4/12
- 12:00 am midnight
- I heard Aries banging under my desk like he was scratching; but I knew that something didn't sound right. I could see that he was stiff and rigid and falling to the floor. Aries began to shake uncontrollably while his eyes dilated and he defecated.
- 12:02
- Cradling his head and trying to comfort him with soothing words, I finally sense the seizing slow down and s As I tried to reach up onto my desk to find the phone (it was either a call to the ER vet or Jim), I glanced at the time, but still felt that something was still wrong. Aries had gone unbelievably rigid once again. For nearly 3 minutes, he was in this state. I was so worried that he had just passed away in my arms, that I put my ear to his chest to hear if his heart was still beating. It took me several seconds, through my sobbing, to finally hear his heartbeat. His eyes were huge and totally unresponsive as I called to him and begged him to come back to me.
- 12:05
- I glanced at my watch, as Aries eyes re-focused on me for a second before another round of shaking and seizing hit him.
- 12:07
- Finally, his muscles began to untense and unclench, and Aries slowly seemed to awaken to his surroundings. With all the other dogs clustered around watching, I knew Aries was better when he gave a low growl to his "bubba" Zeus for being too close to "his" area.
Spending the next two hours, crying and watching Aries for further signs, I began my research. Now I also believe that the "tic" that Aries has in his back leg (You know how a dog's leg with "scratch" when you get just that right place? That's what his back left leg will do uncontrollably for a few seconds frequently throughout the day.) is actually a sign of partial seizures.
Partial Seizures are odd things where the seizure activities such as the leg paddling, muscle spasms, neck and head bending or the main part of the body and facial muscle spasms only occur in one part of the body. These types of seizures can worsen until they appear to be Grand Mal or Mild Tonic-clonic but the difference is how the seizure began. Both Tonic-clonic types seem to be overall body from the start but the partials may just start at the face or one hip.
Aries has always had this "tic" and has been a very temperamental dog. We also noticed that after being given sweets, his attitude is much better. Since low blood sugar is a possible cause of dog seizures, I am going to get Aries tested for this. Also, I plan to have him x-rayed since tumors run in this line of spaniels and that's another possible seizure cause. It's been over 48 hrs. now, and Aries has been fine since, although my nerves are still quite frazzled.
It's still not time to plant anything up here in Ohio quite yet; but that doesn't mean that I can't get a head start on everything. I spent a couple hours at EAC and got their flower beds ready. They'll be beautiful when filled with cosmos and hollyhocks later this Summer.
If you'd paid any attention over the years, you'll know that I just love doing all this yard work. Well, a dream has come true. Since Jim and I are together but living in two houses, it means that now I have TWO yards to play in! |
Both sides of Jim's driveway are ready to be planted in Cosmos. Here's another GBS for this month. That's the rear-end of Darth, Jim's Hyundai, as I followed him back to my house one evening.

Even though you think that I had had just about enough "fun and excitement" for one week, there's still more coming. I have a doctor's visit coming up, with the latest blood work results. (Don't worry. I've stayed on the meds, and these numbers should even be better than last time. ) Then on Thursday, I'll be heading up to Cleveland with Linda for a concert by the "Psychedelic Furs" - an 80's new wave/punk band that did the title songs to the movie "Pretty in Pink" and the TV show "Charmed". Hopefully, I'll be able to sneak my camera in and get some pictures for the next update. Plus, I'm sure I'll be updating you on Carolynn, Aries, and by that time, I bet I'll be planting flowers and taking pictures of that too.
Week Three: |
Linda (who must have nothing to do at work but listen to the radio ) frequently wins in the on-air contests. Recently she won tickets to a concert and invited me along. Jim was kind enough to let us borrow his car (my old car and Linda's car are really in NO shape for the hour drive), and we headed up to the House of Blues in Cleveland to see the "Psychedelic Furs". (If you don't know who they are, all I can tell you is that they are an 80's new wave band that did the title song for the movie "Pretty in Pink" and recently the theme song for the TV show "Charmed".) |
the facade over the stage |
The House of Blues has a restaurant and large lobby in the front, followed by a bar area, and then the floor in front of the stage. The small bohemian-atmosphere venue was a great place for a show. There were two opening acts that night - "Seven Color Sky" and "the shore". The first group's CD was produced by the Psychedelic Furs, and sounded similar and good. |

While the Shore looked like the "Black Crows" (a down-home rocking band), they sure didn't sound that way and I was sorry for that. This group wasn't all that good. |
The Psychedelic Furs were quite good and quite loud. Throughout all the acts, Linda and I drank sloe gin fizzes and joked and laughed until we could hardly stand it. It was a very good evening out. |

My attempt at rock candy didn't go as well as I had hoped. Although crystals did form on the sticks, most of the crystals formed in the bottom of the jar and had to be
chiseled out. I'm going to try this project again in some shallow pans, hoping for faster evaporation. Plus, I see that I need to add more food coloring, if I want red crystals. |

I'm only a little crazy and only a little paranoid. But I have excellent reasons for my paranoia (notice I didn't mention anything about reasons for my craziness? ) First, I'm paranoid about my house burning. (It happened once before you know - years ago at the 12th street house) Every time I return to my home, and see that it hasn't not burned, I breathe a sigh of relief. Which leads to my next paranoia. Each time I see that my door is still closed and locked and that I haven't been robbed, the tension eases. (That's happened three times, and I've moved to a new house each time. That's how I ended up where I am for the past 11 years. )
My only other paranoia probably sounds a little weird, but after using my search feature, I see that I have amply reason to be paranoid after June 2002 and March 2003. See, I'm also afraid of birds - IN my house!! Just this last week, as Jim went to leave my house, he and the dogs stepped onto my screened-in porch and things got crazy. Two birds were flying around and sending the doggies into a frenzy. LOL How they got inside, I can't imagine. I never figured out how any of the other birds ever got in either. |
Speaking of birds, the birdhouse that Jim and I built to house YardCam finally got some residents. As I was shaving the other morning, I noticed, outside the window, a large piece of straw hanging in the air. Leaning forward I could see pieces of straw hanging from the birdhouse. When I went out to check, I saw the ground littered my pieces of pampas grass (from my front yard) lying below the birdhouse. |
After setting up surveillance at the Waikem store, I set up some surveillance of my own. Here are some videos of the birds setting up home (in and out, in and out, all day long). I noticed after the first day that the birds were busiest between 8am - 10am, and 4pm - 6pm. The "Cool Video!" are some great captures of a bird fight and two big "swoops" to home. |

 Late Afternoon (45 sec) |
 Cool Video! (10 sec) |
Everyone has been asking and I can happily report that Aries has been doing ok since his seizure. Of course, that "tic" is still there; but no major incidents of another big seizure. |
However, I'm a different case. The morning after that concert (where I stood for hrs!), I slipped on my top stair and fell down the staircase first thing in the morning. Luckily, I wasn't hurt badly, but I do have a big scrape on my back and a bruise on my butt. (No GBS pictures of that though. LOL) |
Since she is the newest baby around, I've got to show you some more pictures of Baba. With the weather so warm, Jim let the cats out onto his screened back porch. At first she wasn't too certain about it all, but within a couple of days, Baba has taken to exploring every crack and crevice of the porch. |

Having done the Spring yard cleaning at mine and Jim's houses, planting at both houses and EAC, the only thing left to do was to set up the fountain in my front yard. (Boy! I must have the Spring Fever. Where's my thermometer? ) |

Then I realized - I have two bodies of water that I can care for: my fountain and Jim's Pool! After first clearing leaves on the cover, I got the cover off the pool and had it out in the backyard scrubbing it up. |
After work, Jim pitched in scrubbing gunk on the bottom and sides of the pool before grilling out some yummy burgers. Of course, as you can see here, the pool is still in no condition for swimming. Besides, the water is still just too damned COLD! |
I did some more searching and found that this is the earliest that we've started cleaning up the pool, although it probably won't be cleared up for another week or so. |

I got to spend some quality time with my doggie friend, Lucy, the other day while Tara was out on a business lunch. Lucy has grown quite a bit over the months and is a really good dog. |
Oops! Another GBS. That's two months in a row, Lucy. LOL |
I mentioned the EAC flower beds and here's one of them. |
Thank goodness I got this picture! (MouseOver CloseUp!) Cute, little (ha!) Lucy that you just saw out in the parking lot. Well, she trampled the pretty flowers to pieces, playing in the dirt. |
Wouldn't you just know it?! I get that Spring Fever bug and start planting, and now they are predicting, [brrrr] sn*w, perhaps, maybe this weekend! Ohio Spring will do that; but the good thing is that the temps start going right back up after the weekend.
Lo, and behold, just in time for the snow, the cosmos are starting to sprout! ROFL Cosmos prefer the weather warmer, but I'm hoping that they will hang in there. Heaven knows, I've already had to mow my back grass three times, with another one by the time the snow is gone. If the danged dandelions came keep blooming, my little flowers ought to be able to keep growing. |
Week Four: |
Every day the cosmos grow and poke green shoots up through the soil. Within two days the amount of plants coming up has easily tripled. |
Even the shrubs are getting green. Soon enough it'll be time for me to start trimming the hedges. |
Remember I mentioned that they were predicting sn*w? Well, it happened! It snowed all weekend; but luckily the warm spell that we had last week kept the ground warm enough that most of the snow melted when it landed on the ground. |
Of course, this snowfall puts off opening the pool for a little while longer. I'm hoping that things will warm up quickly and we'll get the pool cleaned up and opened up sometime in the first of May. |

Recently I got a letter in the mail from my youngest nephew Jackson. Inside was a note explaining a class project called "Flat Stanley". Stanley is a cartoon guy that was cut out and mailed out with a return envelope. The object of this project is for Stanley to "travel" and then when he returns the class with chart his travels on a map and learn some about the USA. |
Of course, I couldn't just write about Ohio. I had to make this a special project for Jackson. Click here for the
web version, or you can download a
PowerPoint presentation (right click on this link and choose "Save as ...") that I'll be printing up and sending in to Jackson's class to show Stanley's visit with Uncle Mikie. You'll see that Stanley had a wonderful trip up to Ohio. |
(If you need a viewer to see this presentation, get the viewer at this link) |
I have some sad news to pass along too. Tara had to have poor little Ethel put to sleep. Ethel has always been a sickly little kitten and even after repeated vet visits, just hasn't gotten well. (I hope you know, Tara, that we're all feeling badly for you. Too many of us have lost pets and know just how sad, bad, and terrible those kinds of decisions are to make. Take some comfort in knowing that your little baby isn't feeling bad any more.) |
